I had the opportunity to travel through Tunisia a few weeks ago, and despite the general beauty of the country, one thing which stayed with me weeks after i returned, was the style of the men, especially when visiting the Desert. I was not comfortable enough to ask for pictures (I'm working on it) but the streets were full of Gentlemen like the below - A timeless style of bedouin men.
Bedouin men masterfully blend traditional and modern elements in their wardrobe to create a timeless aesthetic which is more sophisticated than it first appears. This "accidental" capsule wardrobe approach not only keeps things simple, but refined, there is an understated elegance tied so deeply to the cultural heritage, but i cant help but see this layered Bedouin styled approach all over the big city streets, not as cool, not as effortless, and usually quite ugly if I'm being honest, but the concept in its originality captured me.
Key Elements of the Style:
Traditional Garments:
Dishdasha (Tunic): A long, flowing garment often made from lightweight fabric, ideal for the desert climate.
Jalabiya (Robe): A lightweight, patterned robe that offers comfort and a touch of traditional elegance.
Modern Pieces:
Button-Down Shirts: Crisp, collared shirts that add a structured, contemporary touch when paired with traditional attire.
Tailored Trousers: Slimmer fitting or tailored trousers that bring a modern silhouette to the outfit, although this is only amongst the younger generation.
Styling Techniques:
Layering: Combining a traditional dishdasha or jalabiya with modern clothing items. For example:
Wearing a dishdasha over a simple button-down shirt and tailored trousers.
Layering a jalabiya over a crisp, collared shirt and slim-fit jeans.
Recontextualizing Traditional Pieces: Adapting traditional garments for modern settings by mixing them with contemporary pieces. This seamless blending showcases a unique sartorial sensibility that is both culturally respectful and fashion-forward.
Influences on Style:
Generational Preferences: Older generations and individuals in rural areas typically favor traditional attire, reflecting a stronger adherence to cultural norms and heritage.
Urban and Youth Influence: Younger people and city dwellers are more likely to incorporate Western fashion influences, creating a more eclectic and modern look.
Social Class: Middle and upper classes, even when embracing modern fashion, often maintain a connection to their cultural roots through their clothing choices, ensuring that traditional elements remain an integral part of their style.
Cultural and Aesthetic Impact:
The ability to blend old and new allows Bedouin men to cultivate a look that is timeless and versatile. This approach not only respects cultural traditions but also aligns with global fashion trends, creating an aesthetic that is both classic and contemporary. By selectively incorporating traditional pieces into their modern wardrobes, Bedouin men project a sense of refined, confident style that resonates with both their cultural identity and a broader, more modern audience.
Ultimately, this sartorial approach is a testament to the rich cultural tapestry of the Bedouins, where tradition and modernity coexist harmoniously in the realm of fashion.
The best part of it all, is they do so without though or reason, the same way that you might see an older English Gentlemen with his jacket and flat cap.
Old School Cool i guess.
